I'm using the 2.5 sources.

I get the following in the build:

Application -> <MyFolderLocation>\xmlnotepad\Application\bin\Debug\XmlNotepad.exe

Everything else seems to build fine.

Also <sigh>, when I try to open FormMain in the designer I get the following errors (Build does succeed for XmlNotepad.csproj):

I got it running under VS 2010 c# Express
per the previous suggestion, turn off all signing in all the sub projects

to get around above, backup the PublishDrop.cmd file, then delete the contents of the original (all the command lines) and save/overwrite the original.

When I open a file and save it (with or without editing it), XML Notepad adds three characters to the beginning of the file: hex EF,BB,BF.

This doesn't make XML parsers happy.

Version is 2.5.2798.17141. I did a repair just to make sure. Does the same thing on two machines.

What's going on?

I have had the error from .Net 2.0 web services, too. I found I can scrub the characters in the old DOS editor. Hasn't been a big problem as it only comes up in testing, not production, but still an annoyance.

Created Issue: XmlDiffPatch - NormalizeText on whitespace-only string

This was something I found and fixed in my personal copy of XmlDiffPatch a long time ago, but didn't realize that XmlDiffPatch was still "active" somewhere.

In XmlDiff.cs, NormalizeText method, the possibility exists for an IndexOutOfRangeException when trying to return a normalized string that consists only of whitespace.

In this method, if the string only consisted of whitespace (not blank), i would never be incremented. As a result, upon reaching the following block of code, i is decremented (to -1) and then used as the index into a string.

if (j == 0)
return string.Empty;

if ( IsWhitespace( chars[j-1] ) )
i--;

return new string( chars, 0, i );

The simplest solution is to add i to the test in the first line listed, as follows:

if ((j == 0) || (i == 0))
return string.Empty;

if ( IsWhitespace( chars[j-1] ) )
i--;

return new string( chars, 0, i );

While byte order mark may be legal for UTF-8, it doesn't seem to be compatible with web services developed with .NET 2.0. Maybe the problem is with the built-in parser in .NET web services, but it just seems odd you absolutely cannot submit UTF-8 data edited with Microsoft XML Notepad to a Microsoft .NET web service. Inserting the byte order mark invariably causes the web service to return, "Server was unable to process request. ---> Data at the root level is invalid. Line 1, position 1."

Actually, the UTF-8 byte order mark is part of the XML standard. See http://www.w3.org/TR/2006/REC-xml-20060816/ and in particular the following paragraph: "Entities encoded in UTF-16 MUST and entities encoded in UTF-8 MAY begin with the Byte Order Mark described by Annex H of [ISO/IEC 10646:2000], section 2.4 of [Unicode], and section 2.7 of [Unicode3] (the ZERO WIDTH NO-BREAK SPACE character, #xFEFF). This is an encoding signature, not part of either the markup or the character data of the XML document. XML processors MUST be able to use this character to differentiate between UTF-8 and UTF-16 encoded documents.". So any other XML parser that doesn't handle this is non-standard.

I resolved the execution problem. Turn off "Sign the assembly" in Signing property.

at the Program.cs file at

and at the main routine, add

System.Threading.CurrentUICulture = System.Threading.CurrentCulture;

you should also make it easier for people to localize the main form (which isn't opening in the designer if you don't uncomment #define DESIGN at its top), by providing a localization resource for say French or Spanish by default that they can copy/rename and edit directly to add a new language for that form

Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture = CultureInfo.CurrentUICulture;

But I shouldn't need to do this because the thread is already setup with the default culture.

As for French and Spanish - I'd love to add that - do you want to provide the localized resx files for me?

CLOSED ISSUE: solution's startup project should be Application not XMLNotepad

To be able to run the solution directly, please right click the Application project and use the "Set as Startup project" action, then save solution again and publish
Comments: The startup project choice is not stored in the .sln file - it's stored in the hidden user specific .suo file which is not supposed to be checked in - so you will have to make this choice yourself. It would be nice of VS provided a "default" in the .sln file. Please let me know if you know of a way to do this, thanks.

title says it all.. also get errors when trying to open project for Application:
error from VS 2005 follows:
One or more errors encountered while loading the designer. The errors are listed below. Some errors can be fixed by rebuilding your project, while others may require code changes.

The designer could not be shown for this file because none of the classes within it can be designed. The designer inspected the following classes in the file: MyForm --- The base class 'XmlNotepad.FormMain' could not be loaded. Ensure the assembly has been referenced and that all projects have been built.

Note - I fixed this in Version 2.5 so the #if DESIGN hack is no longer needed. It should just load now.

CREATED ISSUE: xml documentation taken from sml-types

when you document your xml using <annotation> and <documentation>, XML Notepad 2007 shows (in case you hover over the element) the description(documentation) of the type instead of the element. so it misses the point of being a documentation for those who simply want to add and fill some data.
